The state of safety before restoration:

Upon admission to restoration, the picture consisted of eight fragments. All fragments were greatly deformed. The edges of the sections were badly damaged – the colorful layer and soil partially crumbled, the threads of the canvas around the perimeter of fragments were disheveled. The picture required both conservation measures on fragments and restoration of the integrity of the canvas. It was necessary to reunite all eight parts into one and restore the picturesque layer lost along the boundaries of fragments.

Complex of the events:

At the first stage, the work was carried out separately on each fragment – a colorful layer and soil were strengthened, deformation was eliminated. Then all parts of the base are alternately combined into a single whole, by the “v and aid” method. The difficulty of the process was that it was necessary not only to join the corresponding threads of the foundations and the finest lines of the drawing and details, but also to ensure the absolute coincidence of the pronounced texture of the author’s smear. After that, the fragments cooked together were duplicated on a new whole canvas. Surface contaminants are removed from the front side. Restoration soil is brought to the joints and losses of the colorful layer and soil and restoration tints are made. The picture again began to look a single finished work.
