The appearance of a “portrait of the military” in 1916, which depicts an artilleryman in the trench (“artilleryman in the trench” – the original name of the picture). The artist was posed by a young sculptor Mikhail Olenin, a familiar Repin from the pre -war time. The created image symbolizes the “silence of the muses”, but in general it becomes the conductor of the main philosophical idea – “Art is the greatest business of the world, and it remains unshakable, experiencing all the catastrophes of life …”.
